15 Mar Meet Rising Star Celestil: A climate activist shaping sustainable and just futures in the Philippines

Celestil is a sociology undergraduate student from the Ateneo de Davao University in the Philippines with a love for reading and climate justice. She brings these passions as a Rising Star at Wedu, a member of Global Changemakers, and an activist at the Save Samai Reef Alliance.

The beauty of Samal Reef is a sight to behold, with crystal clear waters and vibrant coral reefs that house a rich ecosystem of marine life. Sadly, these natural wonders are under threat. That’s where the Save Samal Reef Alliance comes in.

A passionate community of environmental advocates and organizations within Davao City, Philippines, the Save Samal Reef Alliance is committed to preserving the last remaining reefs in Samal. Their tireless efforts have already made a real impact, from gathering signatures from the Limao Youth and Barangay Captain of Vicente Hizon to documenting the damage caused by borehole drilling and holding committee hearings with Davao Councilors.

But their work doesn’t stop there. The Save Samal Reef Alliance has launched inspiring campaigns that have reached students in schools throughout the area, encouraging them to take an active role in protecting the environment. By coming together and taking action, the Alliance strives to ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of Samal Reef for years to come.

The value of advocating for community

Celestil shared that she has learned so many things about herself since taking Wedu’s Introduction to Leadership Courses and becoming a Rising Star, especially on how important it is to uphold social justice within her community. “It sparks joy in me that as a Rising Star, I got mentored by someone who shares a lot of similar interests with me not only through books but also our spirit for activism.”
