Wedu’s Education Funding propelled Zwe’s environmental activism

Zwe is a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability from Myanmar. With over four years of experience in research and capacity building in waste management and circular economy, her work has contributed to environmental solutions and driven social change in her community.

Zwe’s journey in higher education started with her Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Yangon, followed by her Master’s in Marine Plastics Abatement from the Asian Institute of Technology and finally her second master’s, Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Management, from the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). In 2022, Zwe applied for education funding from Wedu to cover research-related expenses for her second master’s. She found that the flexible model of Wedu’s Income Sharing Agreement (ISA) played a pivotal role in enabling her to focus on her academic and professional goals without the added stress of financial barriers.

Zwe now works as a Sustainability Science Analyst at PXP Sustainability, where she supports technical research on life-cycle assessments of circular production and consumption systems, as well as waste management planning. She envisions a future where she can further impact environmental practices by mentoring young people in her country, offering career guidance, and inspiring future generations to follow sustainable paths.

In addition to her academic and professional achievements, Zwe worked closely with a Wedu mentor from March to November 2023 to support her personal and career growth. Her mentor played a crucial role in helping her clarify her short-term goals, expand her professional network, and navigate challenges. According to Zwe, working with her mentor gave her a clearer sense of direction, enhanced problem-solving skills, and significantly contributed to achieving her academic goals. The mentorship experience also helped her feel more confident in her ability to overcome obstacles and drive forward her aspirations.

Zwe’s dedication to sustainability and climate action have been recognized through multiple prestigious accolades, including WWF Myanmar Planet Hero for her efforts to combat plastic pollution and the ASEAN Youth Eco-Champion Award in 2019 for her significant contributions to promoting a clean and green environment.

Zwe’s story is an inspiring example of how mentorship, financial support through ISAs, and a commitment to sustainability create powerful pathways for personal and professional growth. With her skills, experience, and vision, she continues to be a catalyst for change, supporting both individuals and communities to build a more sustainable future.
