01 Jun #KeepRising: Summer Edition, Vol. 1
Every month we highlight Wedu Rising Stars’ achievements in this series of blog posts: see how they are shining!
Our Rising Star, Sarah Tamang participated in CGI University in April 2016. President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton hosted the ninth annual CGI U meeting from April 1-3, 2016 at the University of California, Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area. The meeting brought together more than 1,200 innovative student leaders to make Commitments to Action in CGI U’s five focus areas: Education, Environment and Climate change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health. Sarah participated at CGI University on an environmental/ climate change agenda.
Rising Star Shafia Mirza recently became the interim President of the Women Across Borders Club, where she organised a fundraising event for underprivileged children in Bangladesh. She is also leading efforts to build another storey at a local school, expanding access to education for children who currently go without it. As part of this project, she has been in negotiations with engineers and stakeholders of the school. We wish her all the very best for her project – #KeepRising, Shafia!
We are also very excited for our three Rising Stars who graduated this month:
Sayma Jamal Meem, our Rising Star from Bangladesh, graduated from the North South University of Bangladesh with a degree in Business Administration. Here Sayma shares about her experience with Wedu and how it guided her through her journey through university:
“In my early university life, I always wanted a mentor for myself who can guide me. When I applied to the Wedu program, I didn’t even know what a life changing experience it would be! I went through all the assessments and became a Rising Star. I got my mentor Jenn from Wedu, who became my friend, in addition to being a mentor. She is helping me in every possible way. We all go through life bristling at our external limitations, but the most difficult chains to break are inside us. My mentor has helped me to break my internal limitations, and she has showed me the path to fulfil my goals.”
Immaculata graduated from The University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, majoring in Psychology. Founded in 1911, The University of Hong Kong stands proud as the territory’s oldest tertiary institution. Immaculata shares her experience here:
“Mentorship was an essential part of my university years. Without it I don’t think I would have been able to have do what I have done so far.”
Our Rising Star Dilshad Begum graduated from Asian University For Women (AUW) in May. AUW is the first liberal arts university for women in South Asia and is one of the only international universities in Bangladesh. AUW is also one of Wedu’s partners, with many Rising Stars currently attending the University.
